Snap-in or screw-in: what panel thickness decides.

Mounting style is chosen by the panel, not by preference. Get it wrong and a correctly sized button will not seat at all, which is why it belongs on the specification alongside cutout diameter.

Short answer

Snap-in arcade buttons hold themselves in place with sprung plastic tabs and suit thin panels, typically under about 3 mm — sheet metal, acrylic and thin ply. Screw-in buttons use a threaded barrel and a lock nut, which tolerates a much wider thickness range and holds firmly in thick wooden panels. Snap-in installs without tools and is faster on a production line; screw-in survives heavy commercial use better because the nut can be retightened.

How each one holds

A snap-in body has two or more sprung tabs moulded into the barrel. Pushed through the cutout, the tabs compress and then spring outward against the underside of the panel, trapping it between the tabs and the flange. The grip is set by the moulding, so it works only across the thickness range the part was designed for.

A screw-in body has a threaded barrel and a separate lock nut that runs up the thread from behind. Because the nut can travel, the same button covers a wide span of panel thicknesses, and it can be retightened later when a panel that sees heavy use starts to loosen.

Choosing by panel material

Sheet metal and thin acrylic panels — common on cocktail tables, bartops and control decks — favour snap-in. The panel is within the tab range, and no access is needed behind the button once it is in, which matters on a shallow enclosure where there is no room to reach a nut.

Thick plywood, MDF and laminated panels need screw-in. A snap-in tab cannot reach past a 6 mm panel to latch, and even where it just manages it, the grip is marginal and the button works loose under play. Any panel with a laminate or overlay should be measured including the overlay, not just the substrate.

Serviceability over the life of the machine

On an operated machine, buttons are consumable: switches wear, caps scratch, lamps fail. Screw-in bodies come out and go back cleanly, and the nut lets an operator take up any slack that develops. Snap-in tabs can fatigue after repeated removal, and a tab that has lost its spring means replacing the whole body rather than just the switch.

For a home or display build where buttons will be fitted once, that difference matters much less, and the speed of snap-in installation is worth more than the long-term serviceability.

Can I use a snap-in button on a thick wooden panel?

Generally no. Snap-in tabs are designed for panels under roughly 3 mm and cannot latch behind a 6 mm plywood panel. Use screw-in bodies on thick panels.

Are snap-in and screw-in buttons interchangeable in the same hole?

Yes, provided the cutout diameter matches. A 30 mm snap-in and a 30 mm screw-in both use a 30 mm hole; only the way they hold differs.

Which mounting style lasts longer in a commercial machine?
